Two critical drivers have fueled Metzgers aggressive growth over 35 years:
Founded by Norb Metzger in 1976, Metzgers began as a typesetting firm that also provided darkroom services. In 1985, Metzgers added a color copy center for businesses and consumers, and in 1991 the company added a digital color printing capability.
Two years later, Metzgers ventured into traditional printing with the installation of a two-color press. In response to burgeoning demand for digital color printing from businesses, Metzgers added wide-format digital printers in 1996.
In 1997, the company made a commitment to traditional printing with the purchase of a 6-color printing press, installed in a new (for Metzgers) 15,000 square foot facility in Holland, Ohio. That same year, in an innovative response to opportunities posed by the Internet, Metzgers launched a pioneering online ordering system.
In 1998 – in response to customer needs - the company launched PointToPoint mailing service to manage outbound direct marketing for clients. And one year later Metzgers began the MomSquad to manage custom fulfillment, again in response to emerging customer needs. Within two years, these services grew to the point that they needed their own facility, and in 2001 Metzgers added warehousing services to handle managed fulfillment services for its clients.
Metzgers printing capabilities grew in 2000 with the addition of a 20” by 28” printing press with an aqueous coating capability. Two years later, the company added a new printing press and bindery equipment, upgraded its digital printing capabilities, and added digital proofing and workflow management systems.
By 2004, Metzgers had outgrown its “new” building and moved to a new 35,000 square foot facility in Toledo. A six-color printing press went into the new facility, as well as new die-cutting, folding and gluing capabilities. Two years later, printing capabilities were expanded with a 40-inch six-color press with an aqueous coater. Also in 2006, the company enhanced its post-press capabilities with laminating, collating, binding and wrapping systems. That year, Metzgers also began to provide variable data printing services. Within a year, the company won a prestigious industry award for their one-to-one variable printing capabilities.
In 2007, Metzgers launched a PFUGO (Perfing Folding Unique Gluing Operations) to enable customers to send out efficient response-driven mailings. That year, the company also installed a specialized envelop printing press.
Once again, Metzgers faced the need to expand its facilities, so in 2008, the company more than doubled its existing facility with a 30,000 square foot addition to house the company’s digital printing systems and fulfillment center. The digital printing center was enhanced with a state-of-the-art digital printing press. Post-press and fulfillment services grew with the addition of an inline stitcher/trimmer, intelligent envelope inserters and multi-station polybaggers.
In recent years, Metzgers pioneered the integration of online and offline services with Web-based customer storefronts that have automated click-to-order production and fulfillment. In addition, the company provides clients with the latest in direct marketing tools, including cross-media campaigns with personal URLs (PURLs), microsites, e-grams, QR codes and other emerging digital marketing technologies.
To help train both staff and customers on both traditional and emerging marketing capabilities, Metzgers built a dedicated multi-media education center into its latest expansion.
The next chapter in the history of Metzgers is being written right now. We don’t know the specifics…yet. But we do know that it will be driven by innovation and a focus on customer needs.
