There is No Success Without Succession

Super smGreetings!

My name is John Metzger, and I’m a third-generation member of the Metzgers family. Our company has a lot of history, so much that its story reads like a recap of a long-running TV show.

In 1976, Norb Metzger quit his job and became an entrepreneur, setting in motion events that would change the lives of his family, friends and many people in our community, some of whom who would never even meet him face-to-face. My grandfather had the qualities of a great boss: ambition and perfectionism, an obsession with customer service and a knack for leadership.

And at home, he taught our family that one minute you can wear the boss hat and the next the friend, colleague, coach, parishioner, husband and father hats. My grandfather’s philosophy has, in my opinion, laid the foundation upon which our company is built. And it is as strong a foundation as any. All those vital traits I see in my co-workers every day.

I saw the company grow as a child, then as a teenager and then as a college student. I often felt like it was an older sibling, this other part of my family. I witnessed the expansion and innovation that allowed our buildings to stand here today. The memories are vivid, from sweeping floors on Saturday mornings at the old building on Corporate Drive to working alongside the Mom Squad, Bindery and Mailing departments, full-time during the summers and part-time during the winters for the last 8 years.

Witnessing the positive impact this company has on its employees — being one of those employees — has been so special, so life affirming, so essential. I began my job at Metzgers recently in earnest. It’s like the threads of my life have come together. I’ve always been a Metzger, but now I’m truly part of this family, this company.

My dad, Joe Metzger, always said that he loved hearing good news: one of his employees rented a new apartment, bought a newer car or signed the title on their first home. Those are the metrics for success at Metzgers — because it has and always will be about that family culture my grandfather planted and the company has nurtured ever since. And yes, along the way, we have provided top of the line service with products that now stretch across multiple industries, all under one roof. But you can look around our website if you want to learn more about that! What sticks in my head, though, and for many of the people that have been with our company for 5, 10, 20, 30 or nearing 40 years, is that culture.

As I said, I have launched my full-time career as an Account Manager at Metzgers, and I could not be more proud to be a part of such great history. I have large goals for myself. To quote Spider-man, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Bearing the name of the company in my own name raises expectations of my results. Although, when you have a driving force behind what you do, it becomes much easier.

As my father fought his illness the last two and half years of his life, he inspired me by sharing many lessons with me. He taught me that no matter what you do, you can never compromise your integrity. His golden heart paired with his innovative mind has shed light on what is really important in this short life: relationships. And just so it is that our business is all about relationships. A philosophy that led my father to his success was giving more than you take. This certainly led to his business success but as notably his personal successes.

I look forward to the challenges and successes that lie ahead. To quote one more superhero, my father, Joe Metzger: “Make each day better.” We fully commit to that here at Metzgers. Our team is dedicated to constantly improving, innovating and performing.

As we press on, I will leave you with what has inspired me lately: our mission statement.

“We ensure the vitality and growth of our business by consistently exceeding the expectations of our customers and ourselves. We must treat customers and fellow workers as we would like to be treated  with fairness, honesty, and a high standard of ethics. Working and living within this mission will assure our company of continued success.”
