The Joe Metzger Award for Innovation

Joe MetzgerThe Joe Metzger Award for Innovation has been established by The University of Toledo, to honor a man who had innovation in his blood.

Joe started his career at his father's type house as a delivery driver. Over the years, he worked his way up through the management team, and eventually took over the family business with his brother Tom in 1996. Joe knew that innovation was the key to the success of the printing industry and this company, and it drove every business decision he made.

Under Joe's guidance, we pioneered new processes, invested in the latest printing machines, and implemented technology to reduce our environmental footprint.

Joe's passion and vision earned him a spot on printing's Top 400 in 2008, and in 2010 he was inducted into the Printing Industries of America Hall of Fame in 2010.

The Joe Metzger Award for Innovation will be given annually to a person or team involved with a project that showcases ingenuity, is relevant to this day and age, and embraces the spirit of partnership. Nominations are now being accepted and must be received by January 5, 2015.

Going Green

At Metzgers, we love colors. We like our sunsets orange, our skies blue, and our earth…green. That's why we embrace green printing options wherever possible - from soy-based ink to solar power. We collect paper scraps from trimming for recycling, and reuse inks as much as possible. Keep reading, and we'll show you what Metzgers is doing to go a little greener every day, and help you make environmentally friendly printing choices, including using paper made from recycled materials.

Metzgers Mom Squad

You need to create a brochure, letter, flyer and business card. And you need all those items packaged together and sent out to 500 recipients – by the end of the week.

Metzgers can help.

How? Do we use a state-of-the-art machine or revolutionary organizational method?

Nope. We do what anyone who needs help fast does.

We turn to our Moms.

Moms make miracles happen every day. They get the kids to school, practice and play dates, while refereeing arguments and solving problems. The Metzgers Mom Squad is made up of real-life moms who transfer their miracle-making abilities to our kitting and assembly services, also known as "print, pack, and ship." Working part time, they can come together at a moment's notice to package and ship your informational packets quickly with an attention to detail you won't get with a machine.

These moms are specially trained in a wide range of kitting and assembly projects. They can handle your mailings for 20 people or 20,000, and they're known as one of the most efficient kitting and assembly units in the entire industry.

The Metzgers Mom Squad can:

  • Assemble, package and ship kits that include print items, display pieces, product samples, and other promotional items.
  • Manage complex kitting operations, including those with a combination of inventory and on-demand items. They can provide partial assembly for hold until the final pieces are delivered, and ship the completed package the same day.
  • Assemble packages comprising multiple variable-data items, with each individual item in the kit tailored exclusively to its intended recipient.
  • Manage staged shipping over days or weeks, or ensure that long-term, on-demand kitting gets same-day shipping.
  • Track and report inventory on a daily basis to eliminate back-order delays

No missing or duplicate items because of machine error. No ordering weeks in advance. No dealing with one company for printing and others for packing and shipping. The Metzgers Mom Squad will make your pack, print and ship job their mission. See the Mom Squad difference for yourself. Contact us to see what our Moms can do for you.

Family Business

At our core, Metzgers is a family business.

We started small when Norb Metzger launched Type House in 1976. We listened to our customers' needs and grew our business by providing the services that would help them grow their businesses.

Norb's sons Joe and Tom Metzger ran the company together as President and Chief Executive Officer from 1985 until Joe's passing in 2014.

Though we've grown exponentially over the last 40 years, the Metzgers you know today is still very much a family business. Tom is carrying on the legacy of his father and brother as Chairman and CEO. Connie Flahie, Tom's sister, runs our Mom Squad as the Fulfillment Manager. And with the addition of Joe's son John and Tom's son Tony to the team, we're a third-generation family business. That's a distinction we're very proud of.

It's only natural that a great number of our customers are also family-owned and family-operated businesses, and we couldn't be happier to have them as part of the Metzgers family.

View Our TimelineIn 1976, Norb Metzger opened Type House, a small business in Toledo, Ohio that specialized in typesetting and dark room services. A color copy center was added fewer than 10 years later to serve businesses and individuals.

In 1988, the company’s name was changed to Metzgers PrePress. Digital color printing was added to the mix in 1991, and due to increased demand from local businesses, Metzgers added wide-format digital printing in 1996.

During this time, Norb’s sons Joe and Tom joined the business. Joe started out making deliveries and working in the pre-press darkroom. In 1996, he took on the responsibilities of president. Tom, Chief Operations Officer and “Employee Number One”, oversees daily operations. Their sister Connie became the first member of The Mom Squad in 1998, and now manages fulfillment services and The Mom Squad.

Throughout the ‘90s, Metzgers’ services grew to meet customers’ needs. We moved to a larger facility in Holland, Ohio, and added a 6-color printing press; launched innovative online ordering systems; created Point-to-Point mailing service to handle our customers’ outgoing direct marketing needs; and started The Mom Squad to assist with fulfillment projects large and small. From 1998 to 2001, The Mom Squad was in such demand they needed their own location. That’s when warehousing services were officially added to the Metzgers repertoire.

Our printing operation grew bigger, sharper, and faster with the addition of wide-format color printing for posters, banners, and displays; new bindery services, including the iGen4 digital printer with saddle stitching; and post-press capabilities, including binding, cutting, laminating, die-cutting, and wrapping.

In 2006, Metzgers merged digital printing with variable data to offer one-to-one variable printing. It allows customers to create completely customized marketing information in large quantities. For this innovation, Metzgers received the PODi Best Practices Award in 2007.

That same year, Metzgers launched PFUGO (Perfing Folding Unique Gluing Operations) to enable customers to send out efficient, response-driven mailings. We also installed a specialized envelope printing press. The facility doubled in size in 2008 with a building addition containing a digital printing press, warehouse space, and expanded post-press and fulfillment services.

In our ongoing determination to make business as easy as possible for companies and organizations of all sizes, we’ve added web-to-print storefronts. These allow our customers to control replenishment of their incentives, business cards, brochures, magazines, and any other marketing and promotional materials they use frequently by ordering online through us. We also offer personal URLs (PURLs) and microsites to help clients interact more directly with their potential clients.

Since 1976, Metzgers’ growth has been fueled by a continuous cycle of learning and innovation, and developing capabilities that effectively manage every new service needed by customers. In other words, we research and watch the industry closely, and we listen to our customers. If you have a question that begins, “Is it possible to…?” or “Is there a way…?” we’ll work on it. We’ll find the methods, the products, and the technology to help you reach your professional goals.
